Five epiphanies from building my portfolio site

Portfolio site up here!

After briefly entertaining the idea of building a portfolio site completely from scratch, only to hear horror stories of dealing with mobile-responsiveness, I went hunting for a simple and elegant template that would just display a short blurb of who I am, what technologies I’m comfortable with, some projects that I had built, and ways to get in touch with me.

It sounded easy enough, but many templates included features that would’ve been awesome if I was a freelance photographer, or if I owned a seven-person business operation, but not necessarily if I wanted to present myself as a software engineer. Trying to modify these templates ranged from tough to impossible as many of these templates came with minified .css and .js files.

Eventually, I decided to meet myself halfway and purchased this Udemy course created by Reece Kenney of Microsoft. The final product did contain many features that I knew I wouldn’t need, (such as several pie-charts where I rate my various programming skills from 0% to 100%. Yes, I will save that for the on-site interviews) but the course did start out from scratch, and my bet was that at the end of the course, I would have a solid understanding of the codebase, and from there on, I could start modifying it to make it my own.
